The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendship and integrated employment. Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a a vibrant international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,300 middle school, high school, and college campuses across the country and internationally.

In 2006, Best Buddies Maryland received a $15,000 grant to support their Southern Maryland Middle and High School project. The grant helped Best Buddies enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through socialization and opportunities for one-to-one friendships in school-based, student-run chapters.
