Margaret Abell Powell Fund

The Margaret Abell Powell Fund:

Awards grants were made in June and December to qualified nonprofits producing classical-ballet and traditional theater in English in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Please Note: The Foundation requires grantees use 10 percent of a grant to provide free tickets to students from nearby school districts who would otherwise be unlikely to attend performances.

We will be accepting applications for the MAPF in 2010. All grantees that received funding in 2007 and in prior years, please apply for our June Meeting. The deadline to submit a letter of intent is April 1st.

Deadlines:

  • Letters of Intent are due April 1 and October 1.
  • Applications are due April 15 and October 15. 

If you are a previous grantee, we must receive a copy of your final report before we can accept another application. Please go to "requirements" for more information.

Before submitting a letter of intent or application: Please review the following guidelines and then go to: Am I Eligible?.

Grant requests must be from nonprofits operating in:

  • The District of Columbia;
  • Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland;
  • The City of Alexandria and Arlington County in Virginia.

The Fund will consider applications for:

  • Underwriting of specific classical ballet and traditional theater performances;
  • Training of local actors, actresses, performers and dancers;
  • Staging and choreography of specific pieces; and
  • General operating expenses.

The Fund will not consider applications for:

  • Performances that are not classical ballet and traditional theater;
  • Organizations based or performing outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area;
  • Productions using performers who are not local;
  • National touring companies, even those performing in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area;
  • Multi-year grants;
  • Consecutive calendar year performances or programs;
  • Construction or improvement of buildings;
  • Organizations that are not "public charities" as described in IRC S 509(a) (1) or (2).
