Domestic Violence & the Maltreatment of Children

We fund advocacy and safety services for adult victims of domestic violence and children who have suffered maltreatment (abuse or neglect). We favor organizations that focus on addressing the holistic needs of victims while preventing future revictimization.

  • We welcome grants that focus on:

    • Economic empowerment

    • Housing (crisis, short-term, and long-term)

    • Civil legal aid

    • Therapies and ongoing counseling as well as the provision of financial and logistical resources needed to sustain these treatments

    • Sustained case management

  • In the D.C. area, for a number of financial and historical reasons, the service provider landscape is fragmented and services can therefore be difficult to access. In the absence of more robust service providers found in other urban areas, our committee is also committed to organizations that foster coordination and collaboration with sister organizations such that services are more readily discoverable and accessible, and in way that honors the dignity of the survivor.

  • There has been limited but promising research on the efficacy of abuse prevention programs. Our committee also funds abuse prevention programs, favoring those that:

    • Are of sufficiently long duration (not brief, one-session interventions)

    • Are implemented in more than one setting in coordinated ways

    • Focus on key people in individual’s environment

    • Focus on safe/healthy relationship skills and changing social norms around gender

    • Offer a safe, stable, nurturing environment

    • Strengthen economic supports for families

    • Are offered at a young age (elementary and middle school)
